Growing Irish‑speaking communities around Gaelscoileanna by building relationships with the language beyond the school gates.
Foraois is a pilot scheme designed to develop Irish-medium community infrastructure in Dublin and provide accessible language options on the doorsteps.
The initiative came under the auspices of Dublin City Council’s Economic and Community Plan (LECP) and responds to the Policy for Irish-medium Education outside the Gaeltacht — Action Plan 2025–2027, which encourages such pilot schemes to create Irish-medium communities around clusters of schools.
Foraois is a partnership between Dublin City Council, the Department of Education and Youth, and Conradh na Gaeilge. The strategy is based on pilot work and international models: community officers and youth staff working with Irish-medium schools to identify local provision gaps and establish sports clubs, youth groups and cultural events through Irish. The scheme is not just for Irish-medium school students; however, the activity begins in clusters of Irish-medium schools where there is initial momentum and interest.
The aim of the project is to make Irish-medium community options accessible, to foster Irish in everyday life and to build lifelong language relationships.
